No signal error / blank screen

How to determinate if the instrument display or motherboard has failed.

When troubleshooting a “No Signal” error or blank screen, the first step is to verify the hardware connections.

First, confirm that the instrument is powered on and receiving power from the power supply.

Below are steps to help determine the root cause of the reported issue.

Symptom 1

Screen is completely blank and the fan on the back of the instrument is not running

  1. Confirm that the instrument power supply is providing power by checking that the small LED light on the power supply brick is illuminated.

  2. If the LED is not lit, confirm that the power cord from the wall outlet is securely connected to the power supply brick.

  3. Confirm that the wall outlet is supplying power.

  4. If the outlet has power but the LED is off or blinking, the power supply will need to be replaced.

Symptom 2

Screen is blank or displays a “No Signal” message and the fan on the back of the instrument is running

In this case, the instrument motherboard will likely need to be replaced.

If your instrument does not have a fan, you can check motherboard operation by connecting a keyboard:

  • Press the Caps Lock or Num Lock key.

  • The indicator lights on the keyboard should turn on and off if the motherboard is functioning.

Additional Diagnostic Check

To determine whether the display has failed, listen for the startup beeps when the instrument is powered on:

  • First beep: occurs immediately and is related to the instrument firmware.

  • Second faint beep: occurs about 5 seconds later and comes from the PC motherboard.

If you hear two beeps total

Please connect an external monitor to the VGA or HDMI port on the back of the instrument (if available).

  • If the user interface appears on the external monitor, the internal display has failed.

If you hear only one beep

The PC motherboard is not booting properly, and the instrument will need to be repaired by Rudolph Research Analytical.

Important Note

The following models will NOT display a “No Signal” message; the screen will simply remain black:

  • API / II / III

  • J157 / J257 / J357

Only the following models display a “No Signal” message:

  • DDM Series

  • API IV / V / V+

  • J457
